Description
St Andrew's Church Hall, formerly Somervail School, was designed by John Dick Peddie and built between 1851 and 1852, with reconstruction drawings dated 1857. This single-storey, three-bay, gabled building has a rectangular plan and features a symmetrical Gothic style. It is set back from the road and has a tripartite pointed-arch window in the advanced gable at the center. The structure is made of squared and snecked sandstone rubble, with polished ashlar dressings that include chamfered cills and hoodmouldings on the pointed-arch windows, and a base course.
On the principal south elevation, there are angle-buttresses on the gables, and a pierced quatre-foil roundel above the tripartite pointed-arch window, flanked by bipartite windows. At each end, there are piend-roofed outshots with shoulder-arched doorways that have timber panelled doors. A vestry addition is located at the rear.
The windows are fixed-pane timber with a horizontal-pane glazing pattern for the timber sash and case windows, which have chamfered angles at the upper panes. The roof is covered with grey graded slate, and there are tall square coped end gable stacks with tall clay cans. The building features cast iron rainwater goods and spear-headed cast iron railings and a gate at the front, forming a yard.
Inside, the hall has arch-braced collar-raftered ceiling beams that cross at the center, supported by scrolled stone corbels. The hall has been more recently reconfigured to its original single chamber layout.
