Description

Dated 1842, with additions in 1859, the British Legion Hall, formerly Taylor's Institute, is a two-storey, three-bay Jacobean schoolhouse, accompanied by a single-storey schoolroom at the rear. The building is constructed of squared and snecked rubble, featuring ashlar margins and quoin strips, an eaves course, bracketted cills, chamfered arrises, and timber mullions.

The main south elevation is symmetrical, with a slightly projecting central bay containing steps leading to a moulded doorway. The doorway has a stepped hoodmould, a shaped gable at its apex, flanked by pyramid finials, and a timber door. Above the door is a bipartite window extending into a gablehead with an inscribed panel (details in Notes). The outer bays on this elevation each have a bipartite window on the ground floor, and smaller bipartites above, with bracketted cills, raised margins, and breaking the eaves into pedimented windowheads. The north-east elevation features a gabled bay with windows to each floor, and a single-storey wing with four windows to the right, adjoining a former school beyond. The south-west elevation has a window to each floor of a gabled bay to the right, with the ground-floor window being blinded, and a lower bay to the left with windows to each floor, with the first-floor window breaking the eaves into a pedimented dormerhead. The north-west (rear) elevation includes a gabled bay to the right, and a single-storey projection, formerly part of the school, to the left.

The single-storey school section's north-east elevation has a gabled bay, offset to the right of the original building, with a lean-to extension. The gablehead features a square, louvered opening and adjoins a two-stage, corbelled bellcote with a bell. A further three windows are present to the right. The south-west (entrance) elevation has a gabled bay on the left with a large, blinded window, two windows returning to the right, and a modern porch in the re-entrant angle; a window is located to the outer right of the recessed face.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 4-, 16-pane and plate glass glazing patterns, featuring a central vertical glazing bar that suggests a mullion design. Top-opening timber windows are found on the south side of the schoolhouse. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, featuring stepped, ashlar-coped skews with bracketted skewputts and block finials.

The gatepiers are pyramidally-coped, square-section and harled, with saddleback-coped squared rubble quadrant walls, inset decorative cast-iron railings, and a gate.
