Description

83 East High Street in Crieff is a pair of late 18th-century classical houses, featuring two storeys and an attic, with a mirrored design that includes pavilion porches. The exterior is finished in painted ashlar with raised margins and quoin strips, and it has a base and mutule eaves courses. The doorcases are pilastered and pedimented.

On the principal elevation, the two right bays (Nos 77 and 79) have a four-panelled timber door on the left at ground level, with windows in the flanking bays on each floor. There is a similar door with a two-part fanlight in a single-storey porch on the outer right, accompanied by a small window and a finely-decorated stack at the outer angle. The two left bays (Nos 81 and 83) mirror this arrangement but feature modern doors, two dormer windows that are out of character, and lack a stack at the outer angle.

The west elevation (Nos 77 and 79) includes a full-width single-storey bay with three windows. The timber sash and case windows in Nos 77 and 79 have a 4-pane glazing pattern, while Nos 81 and 83 have modern glazing. The roofs are covered with grey slates, with modern fibrous tiles on the single-storey bay at No 77 and a traditional rooflight on No 79. The chimneys are coped harled and brick stacks with polygonal cans. The ashlar-coped skews feature decorative skewputts, with a cross detail on the skewputts at the east end of Nos 89 and 91.

Inside, Nos 77 and 79 retain some simple cornicing and have a largely unaltered room layout, while No 83 has a later interior.
