Description
Gifford's Stone House is a late 19th century single-storey and attic cottage positioned at right angles to the street. It features remarkable 17th century carved panels set into the east elevation and has a tall shouldered chimney stack. The building is constructed from bull-nosed red sandstone ashlar, accented with contrasting yellow dressings and long and short quoins. The south elevation has a central door flanked by two 4-pane windows, along with two wallhead piended dormers. The roof is covered with piended slate. A cubical sundial topped with a ball finial on four scrolls is located at the southwest wallhead angle.
The east elevation of the cottage showcases three unusually elaborate carved figurative panels, dated 1660 and attributed to James Gifford, a stonemason, sculptor, and portioner of West Linton.
