Description

The Old Manor House is predominantly an 18th century building, with some original fabric dating back to around 1578. It is a two-storey, L-shaped house with gables, situated on a prominent roadside location in West Linton. The exterior is constructed of red sandstone rubble with dressed sandstone quoins, and some rounded arrises around earlier window openings. Polished ashlar defines the margins of the windows. The roof features coped skews, and there are gable end stacks topped with clay cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also visible. A single-storey, flat-roofed timber porch is located at the re-entrant angle, and a gable-ended extension projects to the east. Timber-framed windows were replaced in 2009.

The interior has been altered and reconfigured over the years, including subdivision into two dwellings and later a return to a single residence in 1930. A comprehensive refurbishment took place in the 21st century, although a stone fireplace on the first floor has been retained.

Local tradition suggests the oldest section of the building, which fronts onto the main street to the south, may have been constructed around 1578 for the Earl of Morton, Regent of Scotland, by the masons who worked on Drochil Castle. The walls of this section vary in thickness from 3 to 5 feet. Originally, it may have had three internal floors connected by a spiral staircase. The later 18th century section extending to the east has walls approximately 2 feet 5 inches thick and was occupied by the Melrose family for several generations. In 1973, a rendered, gable-end extension was added. The Old Manor House occupies a prominent location on the east side of the main street at the north end of the village.
