Description
The West Linton War Memorial, designed by Peter McGregor Chalmers around 1920, is a pink sandstone ashlar monolith. It stands on a shouldered plinth and stepped base and is prominently located on Main Street. The memorial features a moulded garland framing a bronze commemorative plaque, dedicated by the people of West Linton parish in memory of those who died in the Great War (1914-18). A lower bronze plaque has been added to commemorate those who fell in the Second World War (1939-45). The memorial’s design is reminiscent of the work of J J Burnett and R S Lorimer for the War Graves Commission. Peter McGregor Chalmers (1859-1922) was primarily known for his earlier Romanesque ecclesiastical designs. The memorial is situated in front of St Andrew's Parish Church, which is listed separately.
