Description
St Mungo's Episcopal Church, located on Chapel Brae in West Linton, was built between 1851 and 1857, with later additions in the 19th century by architects Hay and Henderson. This Gothic church features a T-plan layout, an undercroft, and a central bell-cast fleche, all situated on a steeply sloping site. The exterior is constructed from grey squared and snecked rubble, accented with chamfered ashlar dressings and pointed-arch openings. A chancel addition to the north forms part of the T-plan. There is a timber panelled door at the southeast re-entrant angle, and a lean-to porch with a timber door on the southwest corner elevation. The southwest elevation has two pairs of cusped single lights, while the southeast gable elevation features five single lights with quatrefoils. The chancel includes a two-light geometric traceried window.
The smaller windows in the undercroft have diamond-lattice leaded glazing, and the roof is covered with grey graded slate, with a banded fish-scale slate pattern on the fleche. The church also has cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, the nave has a collar-beam and arch-braced roof, while the chancel features a scissor-braced roof. A timber chancel screen with intersecting tracery separates the chancel from the nave. Notable interior elements include an octagonal carved stone font and fine stained glass by C.E. Kempe of London from 1893, depicting the Supper at Emmaus and St Thomas Aquinas in the southeast window, Moses and the Serpent, and the Crucifixion within the chancel, and the Virgin and Child in the northwest window.
