Description

Torbaan is a villa built around 1835, with some additions from the late 19th century. It is a two-storey building with an attic, featuring a near-symmetrical design and gabled roof. The exterior is finished in white-painted harl with honey-coloured sandstone dressings and margins, and it has a band course marking the basement along with strip quoins and bracketed eaves.

On the south garden elevation, the villa has a symmetrical three-bay layout with an advanced gabled bay on the outer right. The central bay is raised to a gable with a window in the gablehead. The windows are symmetrically arranged, each with architraves featuring block pediments at the ground level. There are cast-iron steps leading to the entrance, which has a two-leaf door with six panes of glazing and a lower panel, topped by a four-pane fanlight. Above the two end bays, there are slate-hung, gabled dormers. The advanced gable on the outer right features a full-height sandstone bow window, which is complemented by a consoled eaves cornice.

To the right, there is a gabled wooden verandah with a cross-patterned balustrade.

The east elevation has a timber verandah on a rendered base, with the entrance located on the east side. This verandah continues as a single-storey bay along the full length of the house, with a window on the outer right. The entrance features a shouldered arch doorway with a two-leaf door that has upper glazing. There are two windows on the outer right at the first floor.

On the west elevation, there is a gable with windows at both the ground and first floor on the outer left, and a basement door on the outer right with a modern inserted window above.

The north rear elevation shows the main block raised to a gable at the centre with a window. There is a bipartite stair window to the left above a flat-roofed scullery, located in the re-entrant angle between the outer gable and the house. A door and window are present on the north side, with a window in the right return. The ground floor windows are asymmetrically arranged, and the central door has been shortened to a window. The advanced gable to the left features a large window at the centre and a modern door on the right. There is also a single-storey gabled bay on the outer left with a window at the centre.

The villa features 12-lying-pane glazing, with plate glass used in the bow window. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are shouldered, coped wallhead stacks.
