Description

Probably circa 1830s in origin, largely remodelled in Arts and Crafts style late 19th century. 2-storey, 4-bay, rectangular-plan, asymmetrical, gabled villa. White- painted harl with red sandstone margins and dressings; mock half-timbering and red tile-hanging. Ashlar quoin strips.

MAIN ELEVATION: 4-bay main block with lower conservatory wing to outer left. 2 bays at centre of main block over raised basement. Gabled, timber porch reached via stone stair in penultimate bay to right; square dormer above. Outer right bay with timber transomed and mullioned window at ground, gabled dormerhead above. Full- height, canted gabled window to left of porch; timber rusticated, loggia-type basement; cast-iron railings; transomed and mullioned timber ground floor window, tile-hung 1st floor, bipartite window. Broad, advanced

bay to outer left, canted, quadripartite ground floor window, deep base course, curved sides; jettied, tile- hung 1st floor, canted 1st floor window on timber consoles; half-timbering at gablehead. Lower bay to outer left, harled and red sandstone base with timber conservatory.

SIDE ELEVATION: 3 asymmetrical bays. Broad gable to outer left, lower, advanced canted and gabled bay to right of gable; window at ground, swept tile-hung 1st floor. Lower 2 bays to right, windows symmetrically disposed at ground, bipartite dormerhead at centre.

Plate glass casement and sash and case windows; grey slate roof, bargeboards; rendered and coped ridge stacks.

INTERIOR: not seen 1993.

MOTOR HOUSE AND STABLE: single storey, long, rectangular- plan block to E of house; white-painted harl with red sandstone dressings and margins; tile-hung details; strip quoins; chamfered reveals.

NW (MAIN) ELEVATION: gable to outer right, bipartite window at centre at ground floor, door to left; tile-hung gablehead, bipartite attic window. Broad, 2-leaf boarded garage door with multi-paned upper glazed panel. Single door to left, bipartite window to outer left.

N (STREET) ELEVATION: 3-bay; curved outer right bay with red sandstone battlemented parapet; segmental, eyelet window; similar window to outer left bay; hay loft breaking eaves at centre; red sandstone cill.

Multi-paned casement windows; grey slate roof with triangulated,

terracotta ridge tiles; cast-iron finials. Projecting eaves, exposed

rafters.

COTTAGE: to NE of house. Later replacement of former white-painted harl and half-timbered cottage, occupying similar footprint.

GATES AND GATEPIERS: rubble and harl circular drum piers, ashlar, pyramidal caps. Geometric cast-iron gates.
