Description

Torwood Cottage is an earlier 19th century single-storey villa with an attic over a raised basement, featuring a rectangular plan and three symmetrical bays. The exterior is finished in cream harling with sandstone ashlar dressings and margins, including a base course, band course, and quoin strips. The eaves project with brackets.

On the south elevation, there are three bays. Stone steps lead up to the central door on the principal floor, which is flanked by cast-iron balusters. The entrance features a glazed, trellised lean-to porch and a panelled door, with a panelled vestibule door that has six-pane upper glazing. Above the door, there is a blank shield, and a gable breaks the eaves over the central bay, showcasing exposed rafters. Large flanking windows each have a block pediment and louvred wooden shutters. To either side of the steps leading to the basement, there are narrow fixed three-pane lights, and a large window is located to the outer right. Two gabled dormers are symmetrically placed on the roof.

The west elevation also has three bays, with windows symmetrically arranged on the principal floor and a smaller barred window at ground level. There is a barred window on the outer right of the left return and two windows to the left. An advanced single-storey wing is located on the outer left, featuring a single window to the right of the west elevation and two windows on the north elevation.

On the east elevation, three windows are symmetrically arranged on the principal floor, with a door at the centre ground that has a lean-to glazed porch. An advanced block is located on the outer right, with a window in the left return and a blank wall to the east.

The cottage features 12-pane sash and case windows with thick astragals. The roof is covered with grey slate, designed in a piend and platform style, and includes a coped, shouldered wallhead stack as well as a ridge stack on the wing.

The interior was not seen in 1993.

Additionally, there is a garden shed that is single-storey, constructed of rubble with ashlar margins and quoin strips. It has two windows on the west side and a grey slate piend and platform roof.
