Description

Artarman is a Tudor-Gothic house built around 1838, featuring two storeys and four bays. The building has a rectangular plan with a wing extension to the northeast and is finished in white painted harl with sandstone dressings and margins. Notable architectural details include chamfered reveals, a base course, quoin strips, and hoodmoulds. The gabled dormerheads are made of ashlar and topped with finials.

On the southwest elevation, the main facade consists of four bays, with an advanced gabled bay on the penultimate left. This bay features a canted window at the ground level, a window above, and a blank shield in the gablehead with a finial. The windows are symmetrically arranged in the bay to the left. To the right of the gabled block, there are two bays with a timber lean-to verandah that has a swept lead roof. The door in the inner bay is lower, panelled with fixed-pane glazing, and has a two-pane rectangular fanlight above. The outer right has a window, and dormerheaded windows are symmetrically placed.

The southeast elevation shows a broad gable with a lower two-bay wing that is recessed to the right. There are two windows symmetrically placed at the ground level in the gable, with a first-floor window to the right. The lower block is near-symmetrical, with two ground-level windows, the right one being larger. A gabled dormerheaded window is located to the left, with a window directly under the eaves to the right and two skylights.

The northwest elevation features a broad gabled bay on the outer right, with a canted window at the ground level and a window to the left. There is a first-floor window with a blank shield at the gablehead. The lower block to the left has windows symmetrically arranged, along with a gabled dormerheaded window.

The northeast elevation has two gabled wings on the outer left and right, with a recessed bay in the centre. Windows are off-centre to the right, and there is a modern lean-to flat-roofed addition covering the ground floor, along with skylights. A single-storey lean-to block is attached against the outer right gable.

The house features twelve-lying-pane glazing, a slate roof with lead flashings, and pitched ashlar coping on the skews and skewputts, including for the dormerheads. Tall, corniced sandstone ridge stacks on pedestals with octagonal cans complete the roofline.

Inside, the interior has plain cornices and plasterwork, a plain iron railed stair balustrade, and a black marble chimneypiece in the dining room.

The gatepiers are octagonal, made of painted ashlar, with triangulated caps, although the pier to the right is slightly damaged.
