Description
Dalarne House and Orwell Lodge is an earlier 19th-century villa with some later alterations. It is a two-storey, three-bay near-symmetrical building with a later fourth bay addition to the right. The house has a rectangular plan and features cream painted harl with sandstone margins and dressings, a base course, quoin strips, raised sills, and projecting bracketed eaves.
On the southwest (entrance) elevation, the three-bay symmetrical block has a taller advanced fourth bay addition on the outer right. The entrance is centrally located in the three-bay block, featuring stone steps and a parapet, with a heavy timber block pedimented doorcase and a two-leaf panelled door above which is a window. The flanking bays are symmetrical. The advanced block to the outer right has a full-height, ashlar, projecting gabled tripartite window with chamfered reveals that breaks the eaves at the centre.
The northeast (rear) elevation is asymmetrical, with a three-bay block to the left and an advanced block with additions to the right. The entrance is in the penultimate bay, featuring a boarded door and a large plate glass fanlight. The advanced block to the right has a half-piend roofed addition that is advanced at the ground level to the left.
The northwest elevation is also asymmetrical, consisting of a two-bay block with advanced wings to the right and left. There is a door at the centre flanked by windows, with two windows on the first floor. The block to the right includes a single-storey, flat-roofed extension. There is a door at the centre of the left return of this single-storey projection, with flanking windows. The advanced block to the outer left has a modern flat-roofed extension featuring a cast-iron balcony, a large picture window, and modern sliding doors on the first floor.
The southeast elevation has a single-storey lean-to timber glazed porch/conservatory with a two-leaf, part-glazed door on the southwest side. There are three windows symmetrically arranged on the first floor, with the outer left window being blind.
The building features 12-lying-pane glazing, with a three-pane window for the projecting window on the entrance front and on the southeast elevation, and a 10-pane sash and case window at the rear. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring a piend and platform design with lead flashings. There are tall, corniced wallhead stacks with octagonal cans.
The boundary wall consists of a low rubble wall with harl pointing and semi-circular coping, complemented by small piers with drum caps.
