Description

61 Queen Charlotte Street is a later 18th-century, two-storey, three-bay villa in Edinburgh, featuring classical details. It has a semi-circular bowed addition at the rear, dating from around 1820, and a single-storey addition to the right. The building is constructed of grey sandstone, with coursed rubble and polished ashlar dressings at the front. Notable architectural features include ashlar quoin strips and a dentilled eaves cornice with a blocking course.

The front elevation has a deep-set doorway at the center, framed by a Doric columned doorpiece with a fluted paterae frieze and cornice, and a single window above on the first floor. The outer bays have single windows on both the ground and first floors. To the outer right, there is a harled screen wall up to the first floor level, featuring a tall round-arched opening with two semi-circular fanlights, mostly dating from the later 20th century, and a lower flat-roofed addition behind.

The rear elevation showcases a large two-storey projecting bowed addition from around 1820 at the center, topped with a conical roof and featuring three windows on both the ground and first floors, along with a wallhead stack on the west flank. The east elevation is gabled with an apex stack, containing single windows in the left bay and at the gablehead. The west elevation is also gabled with an apex stack and has single windows in the center bay, with an iron window guard on the first-floor window.

The villa has timber sash and case windows, primarily with plate glass glazing, and 12-pane windows at the rear. The roof is slate with a metal ridge, featuring two apex stacks and one wallhead stack, along with new cans and Velux rooflights.

The property is complemented by a low boundary wall at the front, which has saddleback coping, two square coped gatepiers, and swept two-leaf iron gates.
