Description

This is an earlier 19th-century house with additions from the mid-19th century, situated at Woodcote, Pier Road, Rhu. It is a two-storey, four-bay, rectangular building, finished with pale pink painted harl and honey-coloured sandstone margins and dressings. A base course is present, and the eaves project with brackets.

The southwest elevation (the main front) is three bays wide, with a lower, projecting bay to the far right. A door is centrally positioned in the three-bay block, approached by stone steps and a small platform with cast-iron balusters. A panelled, two-leaf door leads into the house, with a window above. A full-height canted bay is located to the far left. Windows are symmetrically arranged in the bay to the right of the front door. The advanced bay to the right has a canted ground-floor section, with a window above, and a gable that breaks the eaves at the centre.

The southeast elevation is asymmetrical, with a blank wall to the far left. A single window is at ground-floor level to the right, and two windows are at the first floor to the right. A single-storey, lean-to scullery is attached to the far right, with a boarded door and a rooflight.

The northeast elevation (the rear) features a near-symmetrical three-bay principal block, with a single-storey, gabled porch projecting centrally. An advanced bay to the far left has a half-piend roofed scullery addition. Windows are symmetrically disposed in the outer bays of the main block. A stair window is set off-centre to the left, and a narrow window is on the right at the first floor. The scullery bay has two windows, with the one on the right being narrower.

The windows are sash and case, with 12-pane glazing; some are 4-pane and some have plate glass. The roof is grey slate, with a piend and platform design. The wallhead features tall corniced sandstone stacks. The interior was not inspected in 1993.

Attached to the southwest side of the house are single-storey, L-plan stables, built against a rubble boundary wall. The stables are harled and have a sandstone raised cill. The northeast range includes a flat-roofed, lean-to bay projecting to the far left. A long, four-bay range extends to the right, with a window, two-leaf double door, a barred window, and a narrow door in the corner. An advanced range to the far right features two boarded, two-leaf double doors leading to a coach house. The stable roofs are grey slate, with coped squat ridge stacks topped with lotus-leaf terracotta cans, and tall corniced stone wallhead stacks with polygonal cans.

The property is enclosed by low rubble walls with harl pointing and semi-circular coping. Squat rubble drum piers have conical ashlar caps.
