Description
Glenmallen House is an early to mid-19th century house located on Arrochar Road, Finnart. It is a 2-storey, 3-bay main block with single-storey additions recessed to the outer left and right, forming a symmetrical, rectangular plan. The house is constructed of rubble with polished red sandstone dressings, with white-painted harl at the rear. A base course, quoin strips, an eaves band and cornice give further detailing to the exterior.
The west (main) elevation features the 3-bay main block with the single-storey pavilion bays recessed to the outer left and right. A polished sandstone doorpiece with pilasters and cornicing frames the central doorway, leading to a 9-panelled door, the upper six panels now glazed, with a rectangular, border-glazed fanlight above. Windows are symmetrically disposed. The recessed bays to the outer left and right feature windows, with the left bay's window replaced as a door.
The east elevation has an 18-pane sash and case window in the centre of the main block, alongside symmetrically disposed windows in the bays to either side. A block to the outer right has a modern timber door and window, while the block to the outer left is blank.
The north and south elevations have timber, square dormers raised above the wallhead stack at the centre, and incorporate slate hanging. The windows are 4-pane sash and case windows. The roof is grey slate, piended and with a flat platform, with tall rectangular, corniced wallhead stacks and stop-chamfered, ashlar arrises. The interior was not inspected in 1993.
To the west of the house are the stables, a 2-storey, 5-bay, long, rectangular-plan block. The stables are constructed of white-painted harl with sandstone margins and dressings, and include quoin strips and an eaves band. The south elevation contains a boarded door with a 2-pane letterbox fanlight, a door to the right with a window to the outer right, and three windows to the left of the main door (the one immediately to the left being modern). A window is positioned directly under the eaves to the outer right and left, with a square opening above the penultimate right and left bays. The west and east elevations have a window and a door at ground level. The first floor has 12-pane sash and case windows, although other windows have replacement glass. The roof is slate, piended on the left side and gabled to the right, with a rooflight and a small, coped, sandstone polygonal apex stack.
A pair of polished red sandstone gatepiers with pyramidal heads stand at the entrance, supported by a rubble wall with semicircular coping.
