Description

The Coachhouse and Stables at Woodstone Cottage on Pier Road in Rhu date from the mid-19th century. This single-storey and attic building has a rectangular plan gabled cottage with an L-plan stable block attached at the rear, creating a U-plan layout. The exterior features painted harl with painted ashlar margins and dressings, quoin strips, raised cills, projecting eaves, and exposed rafters.

On the east elevation, the cottage block has three bays and is nearly symmetrical, with the gable wall of the stable recessed to the outer right. There is an architraved door at the center with stone steps leading up to it, which is a two-leaf panelled door topped with a plate glass fanlight. To the right, there is a canted bay window at ground level, and a small window with a splayed base in the gablehead. The left side features a narrower gabled bay with a bipartite window at ground level and a round-headed window in the gablehead. The recessed gable to the outer right has a window at ground level on the left and an off-centre window in the gablehead on the right.

The west elevation displays three asymmetrical bays of the main cottage, with a single-storey block to the outer right and the attached L-plan stable and coach house to the outer left. There is a projecting window to the outer left, a door with a two-pane fanlight in the penultimate bay from the left, and a door and window to the outer right. The roof features large, modern slate-hung dormers. The windows are 10-lying-pane sash and case windows, with a 12-pane window for the canted bay. The grey slate roof is complemented by rendered, corniced ridge stacks with octagonal cans.

The coach house and stables are accessed through painted sandstone piers at the south, leading to the stable court and the rear of the cottage, with the gable of the single-storey block to the right and the taller gable of the stable to the left. The south elevation has three symmetrical bays attached to the right of the cottage, featuring a segmental-headed coach arch with a gabled hoist that breaks the eaves, flanked by windows. The east elevation includes four boarded, two-leaf coach doors, with two segmental-headed doors to the right.
