Description

The Corner Shop on Gareloch Road in Rhu is an early 19th-century building. It features a two-storey structure with an attic and has a near-symmetrical, rectangular plan with six bays. There is a lower, recessed single bay block at the outer right corner. The exterior is finished in pale-pink painted stucco with grey-painted ashlar margins and has an eaves cornice.

On the west elevation, there is a broad gable on the outer left side with three closely grouped bays. The central ground-level door is modern and features a plate glass letterbox fanlight, flanked by replacement tilt and turn top sash windows. The first-floor windows are symmetrically arranged, with a window in the gablehead and an apex stack. To the right, there is a three-bay symmetrical block with an architraved door at the center, also with a plate glass letterbox fanlight, and flanking windows, including a replacement tilt and turn top sash window. The first-floor windows are symmetrically placed, and there are swept-roofed, slate-hung dormers with timber mullions, along with a skylight at the center. A small window is located in the gablehead on the right return.

The lower block, which is recessed to the right, is a single storey with an attic. It has a large window at ground level and a first-floor window that breaks the eaves in a gabled dormer with Gothic glazing. The right return has a broad gabled section with a window on the outer left, a shop with a panelled door, and a plate glass shop window to the right, all beneath a well-painted fascia. There are also two small attic windows, which are symmetrically arranged and consist of six-pane sash and case.

The building features 12-pane sash and case windows and tripartite dormerheads, with a nine-pane window at the center and six-pane sidelights. The roof is covered with green slate and has an ashlar ridge and coping to the skews. The west elevation has a corniced apex stack, while the gable of the lower block on the east side features a broad, corniced sandstone apex stack.

The interior was not seen during the last assessment in 1993.
