Description
The Old Inn on Parkhill Road in Old Rattray is an early to mid 18th century building that was extended at the rear in the later 20th century. It is a two-storey and attic, three-bay rectangular house with a single storey and raised basement wing, situated on sloping ground that falls to the west. The structure is made of rubble with large, roughly squared red sandstone quoins. The entrance features a doorpiece with a moulded arris and an incised lintel.
The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, is symmetrical. It has a two-leaf panelled timber door with a lintel inscribed '17 TW (3 interlocking hearts) 'G '9' at the center on the ground floor. There are windows in the flanking bays, with the left window widened, and a damaged mounting block with steps at the outer left angle. The first floor has regular fenestration, and there are three modern rooflights above. To the outer right, there is a lower set-back bay with two small windows at the basement level, and a stone forestair in the re-entrant angle leads to a boarded timber door on the left and a window on the right.
The west elevation facing Parkhill Road features a tall gabled design with a single window to the left on the first floor and two tiny attic windows in the gablehead. The north elevation at the rear has a single window immediately to the right of center on the ground floor and one at center on the first floor, along with a small traditional rooflight above. There is a low flat-roofed extension projecting to the left. The east elevation has a gabled design with a small blocked window to the left.
The windows throughout the building feature various glazing patterns, including 4-, 6-, 12-pane, and plate glass, all set in timber sash and case frames. The roof is covered with grey slates, although there are some Velux rooflights that are out of character with the building. The chimney stacks are made of coped ashlar and rubble, with the one to the east of the two-storey part having been rebuilt. The building has broad ashlar-coped skews to the two-storey bays. The boundary walls are made of coped rubble.
