Description
The Rhu Inn, located at 49 Gareloch Road in Rhu, has an early 19th century core that was reworked in the early 20th century with various additions and alterations. This two-storey, four-bay inn has a near-symmetrical rectangular plan and is finished with white-painted harl. It features Art Nouveau glazing and decorative, scrolled cast-iron window guards, along with timber eaves.
On the southeast elevation, there is a bipartite window at the ground outer left with a stone mullion. To the right, a tripartite door includes a two-leaf panelled outer door with narrow stained glass sidelights. The inner door is also tripartite, with a segmental head, a glazed upper portion, and leaded frosted glass for the main door, accompanied by narrow sidelights featuring a stained glass floral motif. Above, a gently bowed oriel interrupts the eaves, consisting of four plate glass panes with timber mullions. The central block is two bays wide and symmetrical, with a narrow window and door at the ground level. A cantilevered timber canopy and sign extend over the door, which has a two-leaf narrow design and a narrow panelled inner door with leaded and stained glass. At the first floor, two windows are symmetrically placed, and there is a truncated stack at the center. To the ground outer right, a shop window features plate glass with stained glass upper details, and the door is recessed to the right. Above this, there is another gently bowed oriel with four panes, including tripartite upper panes and a plate glass lower section.
The windows throughout include leaded glass with opaque Art Nouveau stained glass, featuring bipartite and tripartite upper panes and plate glass lower sections, with sash and case windows. The roof is covered with green slate, some of which is purple slate, and has an ashlar ridge and coping to the skews. The left gable has a small harled, coped apex stack, while the right gable features a broad sandstone, corniced stack, and there is a truncated wallhead stack at the center of the west elevation.
Inside, some original early 20th century doors, panelling, and fittings remain.
