Description
West Linnburn is an asymmetrical villa dating from 1836, with significant alterations in 1884. It is two storeys with an attic and incorporates Baronial and Jacobethan detailing. The exterior is largely harled with sandstone margins and dressings, featuring chamfered arrises, string courses, a base course, a corbel cornice, and hoodmoulds.
The south-facing (entrance) elevation presents two distinct blocks. To the right is a four-bay block from 1836, featuring a Baronial porch, while a three-bay block to the outer right was reworked in 1884. The 1836 block has a gable of two bays on the outer left, with symmetrically disposed windows; the windows in the inner bay are blind. A string course steps as a hoodmould over the first-floor windows. Pinnacled turrets stand on roll-moulded corbelling at the corners. Two lower gabled bays are positioned to the right with advanced dormerheads supported on corbels. An advanced ashlar porch stands immediately to the right of the gable, with octagonal corner buttresses topped with conical caps and a ball finial; a crenellated parapet sits on a billetted cornice and displays a shield at its centre. The roll-moulded door surround frames a two-leaf outer door with Gothic panelling. The vestibule door includes three lower panels and upper fixed glazing with 15 panes. The 1884 block is slightly advanced to the right and features symmetrically disposed bipartite windows at ground and first floor levels; those at the upper level are larger. A string course steps as a hoodmould over the first-floor windows, and a date plaque displays the year 1884 above the centre window. Two bipartite dormerheads are symmetrically disposed at the attic level, and an ashlar parapet between them is supported on a corbel cornice, behind which a mansard roof rises.
The west elevation is dominated by an advanced gabled bay, off-centre to the right, showcasing a full-height canted window at the centre. A quatrefoil-panelled frieze sits between the ground and first floors, topped by a crenellated parapet. A blind niche is incorporated into the gablehead. To the right are three symmetrical bays with bipartite windows and hoodmoulds, and gabled dormerheads, with the centre dormerhead being wider. A recessed two-bay block is located to the left, featuring a tripartite window at ground level, outer left, and a bipartite dormerhead. A bipartite window is situated at the first floor in the inner bay. A curved ashlar entrance exists in the re-entrant angle, having a segmental-headed, two-leaf door with six panels and a plate-glass fanlight; it also has a chamfered arris and a parapet on a billetted cornice.
The north elevation is rendered and painted. An advanced gable is positioned to the outer right, with two symmetrically disposed windows at ground level and a single window at the centre of the gablehead. A lower recessed jamb is built against the gable. A piend-roofed block is situated to the outer left.
The windows are plate glass sash and case style. The roof is grey slate, pitched and piended, with ashlar coping to the skew blocks and skewbacks. Dormerheads are similarly treated. Corniced ridge and apex stacks have octagonal cans with billetted cornices. The rainwater heads are square, cast iron, and decorated with a floral motif.
The interior was not inspected in 1993.
A terrace, located to the west of the house, has an ashlar balustraded parapet with a square die and cushion coping. Stone steps lead to terraced gardens at either end of the balustrade, which are linked by a crenellated terrace wall.
A sloping boundary wall consists of stugged coursed sandstone with ashlar coping. The gate piers are stugged with corniced pyramidal caps.
