Cragmhor With Balustraded Parapet, Shore Road, Shandon

Cragmhor is an earlier 19th-century villa with later 19th-century additions, situated on a raised plateau. It is a two-storey, asymmetrical building with a rambling plan, faced in cream harl with sandstone margins and dressings. Chamfered reveals are a feature, along with strip quoins, an eaves band, and a base course. Windows are positioned directly under the eaves, supported by projecting brackets as eaves.

The west elevation is dominated by an advanced three-bay main block, with a taller block behind it. A timber conservatory porch, set on a high masonry base, occupies the centre, and an elaborate wrought-iron balcony sits above it. Stone steps with decorative cast-iron balusters lead to the entrance on the left return. The entrance door is glazed with timber lower panels, flanked by side lights, and sheltered by a glazed canopy supported on decorative cast-iron brackets. The windows are 6-paned, with coloured patterned glass in the upper sections. A timber bow window is located to the outer right bay at ground level, with a single window to the outer left. The first-floor windows are symmetrically arranged.

The north elevation features an advanced single bay with a full-height bay window to the outer left, and a tall window at first floor to the right return. A lower, two-bay symmetrical block sits to the right, with a late 19th-century lean-to timber conservatory on a harled base in the re-entrant angle. Stone steps lead to a glazed door on the right return, again with timber balusters and coloured leaded upper panes. The windows are 6-paned.

On the south elevation, a raised area is accessed by stone steps, which include modern cast-iron work, and is divided by walls and modern plantings. A tall block is located to the outer right, featuring five varied openings at ground level, and two windows at first floor. A tall sandstone tripartite window is situated to the outer right, with a single window in the penultimate bay. A sandstone blank escutcheon sits above. A lower two-bay block sits to the left, with symmetrically disposed windows at first floor, and a modern door at ground level in the inner bay.

The windows are a mix of 4-pane and plate glass sash and case designs, although uPVC windows are used on the first floor of the main elevation. The roof is grey slate, with piend and platform sections and lead flashings. Three octagonal wallhead stacks are grouped, each with a single, octagonal can.

A rectangular-plan winter garden, with cement rendering, is located to the south, against the boundary wall. It has a canted four-light window facing west, with projecting flat-roofed eaves. A gabled Gothic timber feature is raised at the centre of the flat roof. This incorporates a round-headed, Y-traceried window with detailed painted glass at the centre, flanked by smaller painted glass panels. The garden is lit on all sides by these small painted glass panels.

A curved, honey-coloured sandstone balustraded parapet runs directly in front of the main elevation. The parapet features squat balusters on a base, with slab coping terminated by corniced dies, each topped with urns.
