Description

15 and 17 Spottiswoode Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey, five-bay tenement building designed by George McCrae in 1882. It features Baronial architectural details and is part of a terrace. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked cream sandstone, accented with polished ashlar dressings. Notable features include a base course, an eaves cornice, and architraved openings at the ground level. The windows have raised surrounds, chamfered reveals, and there are panelled doors with plate glass fanlights.

On the entrance elevation, there is a pedimented doorway in the second bay, with single windows above it. To the right of the centre, there is a lugged and corniced doorway, with a single window at the ground level between the doorways. The central bay features bipartite windows, with those on the second and third floors corbelled and advanced. The building has a stone-finialled crow-stepped gable linked to a wallhead stack. The fourth bay also has bipartite windows, and there is a finialled semi-circular dormer head above the third-floor window. Full-height canted windows are present in the outer left and right bays, with dividing cornices at the ground and second floors. The roofs are pyramidal with lead finials, and the building has four-pane sash and case windows, although some have been replaced on the second floor. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring a corniced wallhead stack, coped mutual stacks, and scroll skewputts.

The property includes a low boundary wall along the street. The interiors were not seen in 1991.
