Description

7 and 9 Spottiswoode Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey, four-bay tenement building designed by George Wilson in 1880. It is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone, featuring contrasting polished ashlar dressings. The building has a base course, cill courses at the first and third floors, and a corbel table at the third floor that steps down to the second floor between the central bays. The entrance elevation includes paired roll-moulded doorways in the third bay with panelled doors and border-glazed fanlights, along with single windows above. There are scrolled open pediments over the third-floor windows. The second bay also has single windows and a scrolled open pediment over the third-floor window. The gable features a gablehead stack, scroll skewputts, and kneelers linking the second and third bays, as well as a blinded roundel set in the gablehead. The outer left and right bays have full-height advanced tripartite windows, with a dividing cornice at the first floor and an eaves cornice. The roofs are piended with lead finials, and the plate glass sash and case windows have surrounds painted at the first floor to the right. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a coped gablehead stack, coped mutual stacks, and a crowstepped gable adjoining the tenement to the north. The boundary to the street is low and coped. The interiors were not seen in 1991.
