Description
8 Spottiswoode Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey, four-bay tenement building designed by Edward Calvert in 1885, featuring Baronial architectural details and forming part of a terrace. The building is constructed from squared and snecked cream sandstone, accented with contrasting polished dressings. It has a base course and a string course above the ground floor. The third floor has single windows that break the eaves, which are topped with semi-circular pediments.
On the entrance elevation, there is a roll-moulded doorway with a relieving arch located to the right of the center, leading to a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight. To the right of the doorway, there is a small single window, with additional single windows located above. The second bay also features single windows. The outer left and right bays have full-height canted windows that are corbelled to a square at the crowstepped gables, with a string course above the first floor. A central corbelled chimney breast with a wallhead stack is present, along with plate glass sash and case windows. The roof is made of grey slate and includes a coped wallhead stack and coped mutual stacks.
The property is bordered by a low coped boundary wall along the street. The interiors were not seen during the inspection in 1991.
