Description

12 and 13 Marchmont Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey, four-bay tenement building designed by Edward Calvert in 1883. It features Baronial details and is part of a terrace. The structure is constructed from squared and snecked orange sandstone, with contrasting polished ashlar dressings. Key architectural elements include a base course, a string course at the first floor, and relieving arches with roll-moulded basket-arches over the ground floor openings in the central bays. The building has panelled doors, plate glass fanlights, and third-floor windows that break the eaves, along with chamfered reveals.

On the entrance elevation, there is a doorway with a single window flanking it to the right in the second bay, with single windows above. The third-floor window is set in a corbelled panel with a crow-stepped dormer head linked to a wallhead stack. There is also a doorway in the third bay, with single windows above and a pedimented dormer head featuring a stone finial. The outer left and right bays have full-height canted windows that are corbelled to a square at the gablehead. A relieving arch is present at the second floor between the second and third bays. The building has four-pane sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, a coped wallhead stack, scroll skewputts, and stone finials at the gableheads.

The interiors were not seen in 1991, and there is a low boundary wall to the street.
