Description
6, 7, 8 Marchmont Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey, five-bay tenement building designed by Alexander MacNaughton in 1882. It features Jacobean details and is part of a terrace. The exterior is made of coursed orange sandstone with polished ashlar dressings and has been stone-cleaned. Notable architectural elements include a base course, a string course above the ground floor and at the second floor, raised window surrounds, chamfered reveals, roll-moulded doorways, panelled doors, and plate glass fanlights.
The entrance elevation has a shouldered doorway at the center, adorned with pilasters and strapwork carving in an open pediment, flanked by single windows. Above this, there are single windows, and a semi-circular dormerhead. There are doorways in the second and fourth bays, with single windows above each, a pedimented dormerhead in the second bay, and a semi-circular dormerhead in the fourth bay. The outer bays feature full-height canted windows that are corbelled to square at the gableheads, with a corniced slit window in the gablehead to the outer left and a string course over the slit window in the mannered gablehead to the outer right. The building has plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, a corniced wallhead stack with a blank diamond panel inset, and coped mutual stacks.
