Description
85, 87, and 89 Warrender Park Road is a four-storey corner tenement block designed by George Wilson in 1886, featuring Jacobean details and a corner tower. The building is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. It has a base course, a string course above the ground floor, and cill courses at the first and third floors. The third floor has single windows that break the eaves in semi-circular dormerheads, with raised window surrounds and chamfered reveals.
On Warrender Park Road, the building has five bays with a polygonal corner tower on the outer right. There is a doorway with a Gibbsian surround and pediment located between the first and second bays, and a similar doorway offset to the right in the fourth bay. Above these doorways are single windows, with a broken pediment over the first-floor window. To the left of the corbel in the third bay, there is a doorway flanking advanced bipartite windows, and a single window flanking to the right at ground level. A pedimented slit window is set in a curvilinear gablehead. The first bay features a full-height canted window, with a scrolled pediment over the ground floor window and a pediment over the first-floor window. The building also has a balustraded parapet and an oculus set in the curvilinear gable behind. There are single windows in the second and fifth bays, and a single window at ground level between the third and fourth bays. The polygonal corner tower, which breaks the eaves, has three windows at ground level and three more with shallow curvilinear cill details at the first and fourth floors, topped with an ogee roof and a weathervane finial.
On Spottiswoode Street, the building has three bays with a polygonal corner tower on the outer left. Each bay features single windows, with pediments over the first-floor windows and the central window at the second floor. The windows are plate glass sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a corniced wallhead stack and coped and rendered mutual stacks. The interiors were not seen in 1991. There is a low boundary wall to the street.
