Description

3 and 5 Spottiswoode Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey, four-bay tenement building designed by George Wilson in 1880, showcasing Scottish Renaissance architectural details. The structure is built from squared and snecked cream sandstone, featuring polished ashlar dressings. Notable external elements include a base course, a cill course at the first floor, a string course above a blank tablet at the third floor, an eaves cornice, raised window surrounds, chamfered reveals, and advanced pedimented surrounds to the single windows at the third floor.

The entrance elevation features two shouldered and pilastered doorways with hoodmoulds located in the second bay, which contain panelled doors and border-glazed fanlights. Above these doorways are single windows, with additional windows in the third bay. The outer left and right bays have full-height canted windows, while the first floor displays pedimented and pilastered central lights with facetted roofs. The building has plate glass sash and case windows, with divided upper sashes; some have been replaced at the ground floor to the right and the first floor to the left. The roof is covered with grey-green slate and includes a corniced wallhead stack, gablets to the north and south, and stone finials on the pedimented windows.

The interiors were not seen in 1991. A low boundary wall lines the street.
