Description

The Lodge at Southpark in Ascog, Bute, dates from the later 19th century, with alterations made in the later 20th century. It is a single-storey, four-bay gatelodge featuring classical architectural details. The central section is advanced, with a single bay addition that is recessed to the outer left. There is a rear entrance from Balmory Road. The building is constructed from squared and snecked stugged yellow sandstone, with a raised, polished base course and raised eaves course. The eaves are overhanging and bracketed with timber. The quoins are pilastered and offset to the right of the center, and the openings have shouldered arches with projecting cills. The elevation facing Balmory Road is finished in harl-pointed random rubble, with polished surrounds to the openings and projecting cills.

On the south (garden) elevation, there is a single window centered in the advanced gabled bay, with another window in the recessed bay to the left. There is a flat-roofed, rendered addition that is recessed to the outer left. A narrow single window in the recessed bay is offset to the right of center, which was formerly a porch, featuring shouldered-arch panelling and pilastered quoins. There is a blind bay that is recessed to the outer right.

The north (Balmory Road) elevation has three bays with a single bay addition to the outer right. A boarded timber door is centered at the ground level, with small single windows in the two remaining bays to the right.

The windows are predominantly four-pane timber sash and case, with timber casements facing Balmory Road. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, and the rainwater goods have been replaced. There is a coped sandstone ridge stack offset to the left of center, with octagonal cans, and a rendered wallhead stack to the west, along with a single octagonal can.

The interior was not seen in 1996.
