Description
Ascog Lodge, located at Ascog House, is a 2-storey, symmetrical classical house built around 1840 by civil engineer Robert Thom. It has been refurbished in the later 20th century and is now used as holiday accommodation. The exterior features whitewashed harl with yellow sandstone ashlar dressings, including a raised base course, a raised lintel course beneath moulded eaves, and narrow strip quoins. The building has ashlar margins, projecting cills, an architraved door surround, and lying-pane glazing.
On the entrance elevation, there are cast-iron balustraded steps leading to a centrally placed 2-leaf timber panelled door, which is topped by a tripartite, plate-glass fanlight with an architraved surround. Above this, a tripartite window with ashlar mullions and a blind central opening is aligned at the first floor. Flanking the entrance are single windows at the ground level, with basement windows below and small single windows aligned at the first floor.
The rear elevation is 5-bay with a large stair window centered at the first floor and regular fenestration at the basement, ground, and first floors in the remaining bays on the outer left and right.
The building features 4-, 8-, and 12-pane lying-pane timber sash and case glazing, a graded grey slate roof, replacement rainwater goods, and coped wallhead stacks to the north and south, with various octagonal cans.
Inside, there is a part-glazed timber panelled vestibule door, internal timber panelled doors, timber skirting boards, plaster cornices, and timber panelled shutters. Some fireplaces are present, along with a decorative cast-iron balustraded stair featuring stone treads and a timber handrail.
The gatepiers consist of panelled square-plan sandstone ashlar piers flanking a disused rear entrance, adorned with stylised pedimented cornices and cylindrical caps.
