Description
Balmory House Gatelodge, located on Balmory Road in Ascog, Bute, is a single-storey, three-bay gatelodge built in the later 19th century. It features a flat-roofed, single-bay rendered addition on the outer right and a square-plan columnar porch that is offset to the left of the center. The building is constructed from squared and snecked yellow sandstone, with sandstone ashlar dressings. It has a raised ashlar base course and corbelled eaves. The gatelodge includes shouldered-arched panelled bays and shouldered-arched, architraved surrounds to its openings, with stylised corbels beneath the projecting cills.
On the south (entrance) elevation, there is a replacement two-leaf timber door at the center, flanked by a projecting square-plan columnar porch. To the outer left, there is a single window, while an advanced bay to the right features a bipartite window. The recessed addition to the outer right has a single window. The original block has 2-pane timber sash and case windows, while the addition has timber casements. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and has a piended design, along with replacement rainwater goods. Corniced wallhead stacks are located to the east and west, with a single circular can.
The interior was not seen during the 1996 inspection.
