Description

Ascog Hall is a Scots Baronial villa dating to circa 1844, with later refurbishment in the late 20th century. The building is asymmetrical, spanning two and three storeys and featuring four bays. It is constructed of harl with yellow sandstone ashlar dressings. Architectural details include an architraved string course, corbelled angle-turrets, chamfered surrounds to openings, projecting cills, oriel windows to the south, and gabled dormers that break the eaves on both the east and south sides. A red rubble sandstone garden arch is located to the southeast.

The east (entrance) elevation features a curved, timber-panelled door set within the re-entrant angle of an engaged, full-height central turret. Above the door is an architraved hoodmould surmounting a blind armorial shield. A single window is positioned to the left, and a narrow stair window is at first floor level. A bipartite window is at ground level in the right bay, with a gabled window breaking the eaves above. A small single window is situated on the first floor in the left bay. A slightly advanced, gabled bay on the outer left contains a three-light canted window at ground level, topped by a balustraded parapet. A single window is positioned at first floor, and an ashlar-bracketed balcony sits beneath the second-floor window, centered in the apex. Gun-loop openings are incorporated into the flanking corbelled angle-turrets.

The south (side) elevation is five bays wide. It features a bipartite window at ground level in the outer right bay, with a blind armorial shield aligned at first floor. Flanking corbelled oriels are present, along with a gabled dormer centered above and a smaller gabled dormer in the left bay. A slightly advanced gabled bay at the center includes a three-light canted window at ground level, a balustraded parapet above, and a single window centered in the apex. Corbelled angle-turrets are located on the outer left and right. A recessed two-bay wing to the outer left has single windows at both floors, offset to the right of centre, with a single window centered at ground level.

The west (rear) elevation consists of a five-bay former service wing and a single-storey, attic gabled, three-bay projecting wing, offset to the right of centre. Single windows are recessed at first floor and ground level, the former in the central bay. A bipartite window is in the outer left bay, and a single window is at first floor, offset to the left of centre.

The windows are predominantly replacement two-pane timber sash and case designs. The roof is covered in grey slate, with fish-scale detailing on the conical turrets. Raised stone skews and replacement rainwater goods are also present. Corniced wallhead and apex stacks are fitted with octagonal cans.

The interior includes a stencilled, panelled vestibule ceiling, a panelled drawing room with a contemporary decorative scheme, egg-and-dart frieze detailing, timber panelling, timber skirting boards, panelled ceilings, a cast-iron balustraded staircase, a timber handrail, and stone treads.

The garden arch is constructed of rustic rubble. A coped, harl-pointed wall encloses the site to the east. A partially demolished, rendered wall is located alongside the vehicular entrance.
