Description
The Lodge at Ascog Hall, built around 1870, is a mid to later 19th-century baronial entrance gate to the Railway Convalescent Home, formerly known as Blair Lodge. It features coursed whitewashed render and has splayed flanking walls, with a single-storey store to the right.
On the east elevation, the words "Railway Convalescent Home" are carved above a large, roll-moulded segmental-arched opening, which is centered beneath a turreted parapet. Engaged turrets flank the entrance at ground level, and there are blind gun-loops along with circular panels featuring thistle carvings set in the spandrels. The second stage includes rope-moulding, a stepped corbelled string course, and an armorial panel beneath a round-arched pediment. Corbelled turrets with spiked ball finials are positioned to the outer left and right. The entrance is adorned with decorative wrought-iron gates. The slightly splayed corniced walls on either side feature a rectangular-plan pier with a dentilled cornice and a round-arched parapet on the outer left. To the right, there is a round-arched window set in the store, with engaged piers on either side topped with pyramidal caps, and a stepped cornice on the rectangular-plan pier with a dentilled cornice and round-arched parapet on the outer right.
