Description

Mid to later 19th century (circa 1870). Coursed whitewashed render baronial entrance gate to Railway Convalescent Home (formerly Blair Lodge); splayed flanking walls; single storey store to right.

E (STREET) ELEVATION: "Railway Convalescent Home" carved above large, roll-moulded segmental-arched opening centred beneath turreted parapet. Engaged turrets flanking entrance at ground; blind gun-loops; circular panels with thistle carving set in spandrels. 2nd stage comprising rope-moulding, stepped, corbelled string course, armorial panel beneath round-arched pediment, corbelled turrets with spiked ball finials to outer left and right. Decorative wrought-iron gates. Flanking, slightly splayed corniced walls; rectangular-plan pier with dentilled cornice and round-arched parapet to outer left. Round-arched window set in store to right; engaged piers to left and right, pyramidal caps; stepped cornice to rectangular-plan pier with dentilled cornice and round-arched parapet to outer right.
