Gate Lodge And Gate Piers, Glenborrodale Castle

The Gate Lodge and Gate Piers at Glenborrodale Castle were designed by Sidney Mitchell in 1898. This asymmetrical, two-storey gate lodge is constructed entirely of grey bullfaced rubble, featuring tooled red sandstone ashlar dressings. At the center of the east elevation, which faces the drive, is a projecting squat, two-storey drum tower topped with a conical bellcast slated roof. The entrance is located in the re-entrant angle of the tower. The south front has a steeply pitched gable and a central ashlar canted bay window that rises to full height, culminating in a facetted slated gablet. This front also includes ground and first floor windows that are transomed and mullioned, with multi-pane glazing. At the rear, there is a wing with a corniced end stack and a bellcast slate roof, along with a small modern flat-roofed extension on the west side.

The gate piers consist of a pair of circular bullfaced rubble piers topped with conical ashlar caps and small ball finials. These are flanked by square piers with shallow domed caps, which are connected to similar end piers by a low coped retaining wall, all made of bullfaced rubble. The entrance is adorned with decorative cast-iron spearhead railings, as well as decorative cast- and wrought-iron carriage and matching pedestrian gates.
