Low Lodge And Gate Piers, Crichton Royal Hospital, Bankend Road, Dumfries

Low Lodge and Gate Piers at Crichton Royal Hospital, built around 1900 and likely designed by Sydney Mitchell, is a single-storey gate lodge with a dormerless attic. The building features an asymmetrical design with advanced gables and elements of the Arts and Crafts style. It includes two gatepiers that are adorned with wrought-iron grilles. The exterior is constructed from snecked bull-faced red ashlar with polished dressings. Most windows have wooden mullions and transoms, with small-paned glazing in the upper sections.

The main entrance door is located behind the gatepier in the advanced south gable, which has a roof that slopes down to the single storey on the west side. There is a coped wall-head stack in the re-entrant angle, similar to the stack over the northeast angle.

On the west elevation, there are essentially two bays, with the right side featuring a gable. A pedimental moulding is present over the ground floor windows, with a canted window on the right and another window above and to the left of it, both having relieving arches. The building is topped with finialed skewputts and apices, and has bracketed eaves, all covered with graded slates. A high wall to the east screens a low rear wing.

The gatepiers are channelled and each features a key-stoned pulvinated frieze with a lamp bracket above. Low coping with iron railings, which have been removed, curves around the front of the house, and the south gatepier is linked to a high boundary wall.
