Lodge And Gate Piers, Ross Hall, 197 Crookston Road, Glasgow

The Lodge and Gate Piers at Ross Hall, located at 197 Crookston Road in Glasgow, date from the late 19th century. This crow-stepped, single-storey gate lodge was originally built for Ross Hall and features a gateway. The building is constructed from stugged and snecked red ashlar with polished dressings and dummy short-holes. The lodge has an L-plan layout with a three-bay elevation facing the drive, which includes an inner door, a canted bay to the right with a facetted roof, and two decorative timber dormers. A prominent axial stack with four clustered circular flues is present. The street elevation also has three bays, with the inner entrance bay extending upwards as a square turret topped with a steep pyramidal roof. There is a curved three-light window in the gabled left bay, along with ball-finialed gables and iron roof finials. The slate roofs feature fish-scale banding and red fireclay cresting. The pair of massive circular driveway gate piers have conical caps and are flanked by round-arched gateways with heavy decorative wrought-iron gates. The quadrants are castellated, and the outer piers are topped with pyramidal caps.
