Straun, 85 Ralston Avenue, Glasgow

This building, located at 81 Ralston Avenue in Glasgow, is a symmetrical two-storey double villa likely constructed in the 1870s or 1880s, drawing inspiration from the work of Alexander Thomson. The front features wide outer gables that are shallowly advanced, adorned with fret-worked barge-boards. At the first floor, there is a full-length continuous pilastrade between the gables, with a blind central light at the common wall and an axial stack above. A stone-bracketted iron-railed balcony adds to the design, while timber porches are positioned on either side. The windows are fitted with plate glass sashes, and there are end stacks. The villa has a broad-eaved slate roof and is constructed from stone-cleaned bull-faced ashlar with polished dressings.
