Gates And Gate Piers, Keithfield Lodge, Haddo House

The gates and gate piers at Keithfield Lodge, Haddo House, date from 1878. This single-storey and attic lodge is built from coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and has an L-plan layout. It features crowstepped gables topped with ball finials, and hoodmoulded 2-light windows. An eaves string runs across the face of the gables, which also have keyblocked circular attic lights. The round arched open porch, set diagonally in the re-entrant angle, has a plain parapet and is connected to a 2-light rectangular bay that has a tall crest panel at the center of the parapet, extruding diagonally from the left-hand gable. The roof is slated with a central ashlar stack and a neat modern dormer located in the re-entrant angle. There is a low back porch with a crowstep gable. The dwarf gatepiers are square in plan, featuring battered monoliths with echinus capitals and ball finials on low truncated pyramid capping. The original timber footgates are flanked by dwarf convex wing walls with spear-headed railings.
