Gate Piers, Avondhu House Hotel, 168 Bo'Ness Road, Grangemouth

The gate piers at Avondhu House Hotel, located at 168 Bo'Ness Road in Grangemouth, were designed by architect J M McLaren and date back to 1878. They are part of a substantial asymmetrical baronial house that features two storeys and an attic. The exterior is constructed from snecked, stugged ashlar with tooled dressings and squared rubble sides.

The entrance is situated in a two-storey square projection at the re-entrant angle to the right of the front facade. It showcases an elaborate neo-Jacobean doorpiece, complete with a balustrade and urns positioned above. To the left of the door, there is a crest and an urn set in a panel. The front elevation is characterized by a bold semi-elliptical projection that features a sculptured frieze above the ground and first floors. The attic window is framed by moulded architraves and is pedimented, flanked by obelisk supporters, topped with a cornical roof and weathervane.

On the west side, there is a large chimney, and the windows are primarily designed with transoms or in a cross pattern, with some stained glass in the upper lights of the dining room. A large three-light square projecting window is located on the east side. There is also a single-storey rear wing, which has been altered, and it features a large rear shouldered wallhead stack along with two swept dormers.

The gate piers themselves are square and made of ashlar, banded and panelled, topped with a deep frieze and a pyramidal cap that supports a ball finial.
