Description
The Zetland Park war memorial and park gates were designed by Sir John James Burnet in 1921 and unveiled in 1923. The memorial is a sandstone structure consisting of a hollow central cenotaph, flanked by pillars dated 1914 (east) and 1919 (west), with park gates at the extreme east and west. The cenotaph rises to a height of 8.2 metres, with openings on its east and west sides leading into the hollow interior.
Atop the cenotaph is a sculpture of a lion, symbolizing the British Empire, defeating a stricken eagle, representing Germany. A carved sandstone cross sits on the north (front) face of the memorial, above a lead-lettered inscription that reads, "In proud and grateful memory / of / the Men from Grangemouth / who went forth during these years of War / to fight for God and the Right. / The names of / those who returned not again / are here inscribed." A further inscription at the base of the north face reads, "To you with failing hands we throw / The torch: be yours to hold it high." Lists of casualties from the First World War, also in lead lettering, are inscribed on the east, north, and west faces. A low sandstone wall originally encircled the cenotaph but was removed during renovations in 1948; three new plaques with lead lettering listing casualties from the Second World War are set into its south face, with a smaller, carved plaque commemorating a single casualty of the Korean War situated below.
To the east and west of the war memorial are a pair of square sandstone pillars. The eastern pillar has the date 1914 carved into its north face, while the western pillar bears the date 1919. Originally, these pillars were connected to the memorial by a low wall and railings, which were removed during the 1948 alterations, although remnants of the fence can still be seen on the pillars. Low walls topped with iron railings extend from each pillar to the east and west, culminating in two ornamental park gates. The four gate piers are square sandstone pillars, with simple capitals and decorative urns at the top of each. Further short sections of low wall and railings complete the structure at the east and west ends.
