Description

The gates and gatepiers at Kipperoch House on Kipperoch Road in Renton date from the later 19th century. They are part of a two-storey villa with a raised basement and a three-bay rectangular plan, featuring Baronial architectural details. The structure is built from stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone with ashlar margins and dressings, and has a rusticated base with curved and chamfered arrises, along with moulded eaves.

The south elevation, which is the main facade, features ashlar steps with a stepped ashlar balustrade leading up to the entrance. There is a droved ashlar doorpiece and a balconette parapet supported by brackets, adorned with a nailhead motif and a raised disc at the center displaying the monogram ABJS. An acorn leaf frieze is also present. The entrance consists of a four-panelled wooden door with a plate glass fanlight above, and an inner half-glazed vestibule door. A window is located directly above the door. To the outer right, there is a slightly advanced gabled bay with a full-height canted ashlar window at the center, featuring the monogram JE between the floors. On the outer left, there is a slightly advanced bipartite window with the AR monogram between the floors, topped by a pediment that breaks the eaves.

The north elevation has three bays with a two-bay gable apex stack. The windows are symmetrically arranged, with the outer left bay slightly recessed. There are grilles over the lights in the basement.

The east elevation consists of four bays, with a blank bay on the penultimate left featuring a shouldered wallhead stack. Grilled openings are present in the basement.

The windows throughout the building are plate glass timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and features lead flashings, coped wallheads, and apex stacks.

The gates and gatepiers include paired ashlar with incised triangular decoration on the piers, topped with ashlar candlesnuffer caps and ball finials. There are pedestrian gates to the outer left and right, along with cast-iron arrowhead railings.
