Description
The Lodge at Elmwood Mansion, located at 1-8 Blantyre Mill Road in Bothwell, dates from the mid-19th century and has undergone later alterations and additions. This two-storey, four-bay lodge has an asymmetrical rectangular plan and is positioned at the southwest entrance to Elmwood Mansion. The exterior features full-height canted windows on the south and east elevations, constructed from droved red ashlar sandstone with polished dressings, while the west (road) elevation is made of stugged and squared rubble. Notable architectural details include a base course, a moulded string course between the ground and first floors of the canted bay, and machicolated details at the corners. The windows have chamfered surrounds.
On the south (principal) elevation, there are two bays. The left bay contains a narrow ground-floor window, with a bipartite window close to the eaves on the first floor above. A slightly advanced block features a further advanced wall and a full-height, three-light canted bay on the right.
The east (entrance) elevation is irregular with four bays, including a two-bay piend-roofed garage addition on the right (north). A modern glazed entrance porch is located at the ground level in the central bay, featuring a replacement part-glazed door and a single window above on the first floor. There is a bipartite window at ground level in the right bay, and bipartite windows on both floors in the outer right bay. The outer left bay has a three-light canted window at ground level and a bipartite window above on the first floor.
The west (road) elevation consists of three bays, with the blank rear of the garage addition to the left (north). A vertically disposed window is found at ground level in the central bay, while horizontally disposed windows are present in each flanking bay. The lodge has replacement uPVC fixed and casement windows, a skylight on the west side, and a grey slate piended roof, with slate covering the garage addition. Ashlar coped stacks are located on the east and west wallheads, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods, some of which have been replaced with uPVC.
The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997.
