Description

The East Gate-Lodge and Gates at Arniston House is an earlier 19th century single-storey lodge with a three-bay rectangular plan, featuring later additions and alterations at the rear. It is constructed from droved coursed sandstone with polished dressings, including a base course, pilaster quoins, and deep overhanging eaves.

The northern elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a segmental arched doorway and window recesses with voussoirs. The central entrance features a glazed timber door with a lamp above, flanked by segmental arched windows.

The western elevation is also symmetrical with three bays. It has a central segmental arched window recess that is infilled, and each of the flanking bays contains an eight-pane window. There are 20th century additions on the outer right, which are obscured by a later harled, flat-roofed three-bay extension. This extension includes windows in the centre and left bays, and a panelled timber door with a letterbox fanlight in a slightly recessed bay to the right, along with a window on the right return.

The southern elevation is obscured by a 20th century addition that extends to the right, featuring a single central window, and a late 20th century addition to the left.

The eastern elevation is asymmetrical, with quadripartite diamond-pane Tudor arched windows on the outer right, adorned with a decorative hood mould. The central recessed bay contains a tripartite diamond-pane window, with the outer panes being blind. There is also a 20th century addition on the outer right that includes a central window.

The lodge predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, as well as fixed diamond-pane windows. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and has lead ridges, with a coped ashlar stack breaking the pitch to the east and a coped ridge stack on the 20th century addition. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron.

Surrounding the lodge are hooped quadrant railings to the east, which sweep in towards the gate, supported by coped polished sandstone piers at the angles.
