Description
The Lodge at Charterhall is a gate lodge that likely dates from the earlier to mid-19th century, possibly designed by John Smith, with later additions and alterations. It is a single-storey building with an attic, featuring three bays and a gabled Tudor style, along with a lean-to addition at the rear. The structure is constructed from squared and snecked tooled cream sandstone, with sandstone ashlar dressings, a raised base course, droved quoins, and droved long and short surrounds to the chamfered openings.
On the southeast (entrance) elevation, there is a gabled porch offset to the right of the center, which contains a timber panelled door and a plate glass fanlight, all framed by a chamfered surround. Above the door is a blind armorial panel. To the outer right, there is a single window set back in the ground bay. The outer left features an advanced gabled bay with a projecting stone-mullioned bipartite window at ground level, and a single window aligned above it, topped with a ball finial.
The northeast (side) elevation has a projecting gabled wing with a single window centered at ground level, a sandstone pentice canopy, and a blind arrowslit above. There is also a single window in the porch recessed to the outer left and a lean-to addition recessed to the outer right.
On the northwest (rear) elevation, there is a single window off-set to the right of center, with a blind elevation to the lean-to addition on the outer left.
The southwest (side) elevation features a gabled wing slightly advanced to the left, which has a part-glazed boarded timber door centered at ground level, with a pentice porch above. There is a single window aligned above the door, also with a sandstone pentice canopy, and a small single window at ground level in the bay to the outer left. Additionally, there is a single window at ground level in the bay recessed to the outer right.
The windows predominantly feature lying-pane glazing in timber sash and case designs. The roof is covered with grey slate, has raised skews, and moulded skewputts. A prominent central ridge stack is present, with three linked, diagonally-set corniced sandstone flues and circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1998.
The lodge is flanked by quadrant walls made of tooled sandstone, which have squared coping. The entrance is marked by square-plan sandstone ashlar gatepiers with chamfered angles and tiered pyramidal caps, along with decorative iron gates.
