Description

This is a later 18th century cottage row, originally five dwellings, forming an asymmetrical 15-bay arrangement. In the late 19th century, the walls were heightened, timber porches were added, and dormers were incorporated into the roofs. The construction is of random sandstone rubble with droved dressings. The reveals to the doorways are chamfered, and the doorways have boarded timber doors with gabled timber porch canopies featuring a king post detail that breaks the eaves. Dormers have timber gabled 4-pane windows with simple bargeboarding and carved timber finials, and the eaves overhang.

The south elevation, which serves as the main entrance, is divided into individual cottage sections: Number 1 is symmetrical with three bays, a central doorway, and windows in the flanking bays, with dormers above both windows and a central rooflight. Number 2 is asymmetrical with three bays, centred window and left bay windows, each with dormers above; a doorway to the right bay is flanked by a small two-pane window to the left, and there’s a rooflight above. Number 3, a four-bay arrangement, has a doorway in the penultimate bay to the left, flanked by a two-pane window to the left, a window in the penultimate bay to the right, a single-pane window to the outer right, and a window to the outer left with a dormer above. A dormer also sits above the doorway, and there’s a rooflight to the outer right. Number 4 is asymmetrical with two bays, a doorway to the left flanked by a two-pane window to the right, a window to the right with a dormer above, and a rooflight above the doorway. Finally, Number 5 is asymmetrical with three bays, a centred window, a doorway to the right flanked by a two-pane window to the left, a blank bay that projects, a centred dormer, and a rooflight to the right. The east elevation features a blank gabled bay. The north elevation is asymmetrical with irregular window placement and five irregularly placed rooflights, plus a dormer to the outer right. The west elevation has two bays, with a wide doorway featuring a timber lintel and relieving arch to the right, flanked by a narrow vertical opening, and another vertical opening to the left.

The south elevation has predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the north elevation features predominantly 4-pane timber sash and case windows; dormers have casement windows. The roof is slate, with lead ridges, tooled, coped gableheads, and ridge stacks with circular cans. Cast iron rainwater goods are present. The interiors have undergone significant alteration and few original features remain, and the internal arrangement does not reflect the external divisions defined by the ridge stacks.
