Description

Millbank Lodge, dated 1874 and possibly incorporating earlier materials, features alterations made by architects J & J Hall from Galashiels in 1940, along with later additions. This single-storey, three-bay building was originally designed as an L-plan gabled gate lodge with a flat-roofed addition at the rear. It is constructed from coursed and tooled cream sandstone with sandstone ashlar dressings. The lodge has overhanging timber bracketed eaves, timber bargeboards, stugged quoins, and stugged long and short surrounds to stop-chamfered openings, along with sandstone mullions and chamfered cills.

On the northeast (entrance) elevation, there is a gabled entrance at the center featuring a part-glazed timber panelled door at ground level, with a sandstone plaque above it dated 'AD 1874' and a tapering finial on the gablehead. To the outer left, there is a gabled bay with a bipartite window at ground level, which has a full-width stone pentice canopy and a moulded sandstone plaque above, also topped with a tapering finial. The outer right bay has a single window that is slightly recessed.

The northwest (side) elevation includes a gabled projection to the left with a centrally placed bipartite window at ground level, also featuring a full-width stone pentice canopy, a moulded sandstone plaque above, and a tapering finial on the gablehead.

The windows are fitted with plate glass and 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames. The roof is covered with grey slate and features battered coping to the sandstone ashlar ridge and apex stacks, along with various chimney cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present.

The interior was not seen in 1999.

Surrounding the entrance are quadrant walls made of coped and coursed tooled cream sandstone, which are stepped to the north. There are square-plan piers on the outer left and right, each topped with pyramidal caps. The plain, arched gatepiers are present, but the gates are missing.
