Description
4A Airlie Street in Brechin is a two-storey mansion built around 1860 to 1870, although a drainpipe dated 1901 suggests some later work. The building features stugged snecked rubble with polished dressings and raised margins. The south elevation includes a slightly advanced and gabled section on the left, which has a large four-light canted bay on the ground floor, supported by shafts with voluted capitals. To the right, there is a plain advanced tripartite window with similar shafts, and three first-floor windows, with the outer ones being two-light and the right-hand pair featuring gablets. The gable is adorned with scroll-crested skews.
On the west elevation, there are three windows, and a modern glazed porch projects from the north bay. The rear of the building has a single-storey wing. The east entrance elevation, facing Argyle Street, features a double-leaf door with a semi-circular fanlight, framed by Roman Doric pilasters and an entablature, located at an advanced entrance bay. To the left is a plain two-window gable, while the right side has a two-window section, one of which is bipartite. The roof is slated with a red tile crest and red chimney pots.
There is an ashlar garden wall along Argyle Street that steps downhill, with a square gatepier and coping. A rubble wall about 2 metres high borders Airlie Street.
