Description

Holynbank in Gifford is a late 18th century mansion that was likely expanded to the west around 1825. This two-storey building features classical detailing and has single-storey wings. It is constructed from rubble red sandstone with ashlar dressings, mid-19th century canted windows, and pink harling on the wings and parts of the side elevations. The building has an eaves cornice and a blocking course.

On the east elevation, there are three two-storey bays, with the centre bay advanced and topped with a pediment that includes a blind oculus. The door surround is moulded and rounded at the corners, featuring a hoodmould above and a blank, diamond-flanked shield in the frieze, along with a decorative fanlight. Canted parapet windows flank the ground floor, intercepting the centre bay, while there is a single window in each bay at the first floor. The single bay wings have piend roofs, with the left wing containing a stone mullioned bipartite window and the right wing having a garage door inserted.

The south elevation includes two wings, one of which is modern and has a flat roof. It features a tall margin-glazed stair window and margined windows. The west elevation has three bays with asymmetrical windows, and a service door in a slightly recessed piend-roofed wing on the left. The sash and case windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern, and the end stacks are rendered and lined, with some original cans retained. The piend roofs are covered with grey slates.

The property is complemented by grey ashlar gatepiers of cross-plan to the south, each topped with a simple entablature and a cavetto cornice beneath a pyramidal cap. There are also ashlar coped rubble and rubble garden walls to the west, which adjoin outbuildings and include a terrace wall at the ground level by the house.
