Outbuilding, 1 The Avenue, Gifford

1 The Avenue in Gifford is a later to late 18th century, two-storey end of terrace house situated on sloping ground. The building is constructed from warm-coloured rubble sandstone with various margin dressings and has undergone significant window alterations.

On the east elevation, the house features a two-bay front with a door to the left that has chamfered arrises. To the right is a bipartite window formed from an original window, and there are two original first-floor windows located under the eaves.

The west elevation has a raised basement due to the slope of the land. It includes an off-centre door to the right, flanked by higher-set windows that were likely inserted later. The first-floor windows above are nearly symmetrical, with a small central stair window and a smaller window to the left, which may indicate the size of the original window.

The north gable elevation is mostly blank, with a former door on the outer left that has been blocked, which likely had a forestair. There is a small window at ground level below. The sash and case windows exhibit a small-pane glazing pattern, with some having four panes. The roof is modern pantile with a slate easing course and includes a skylight at the rear, along with end and mutual gable stacks.

There is also an outbuilding, probably from the late 18th century, which has a rectangular plan and is built from rubble sandstone with stugged dressings and a pantile piend roof. It is located on the sloping ground by Gifford Water and features a carriage door on the east elevation with a later lintel, flanked by a modern catslide shelter to the right supported by timber columns. A swept dormer breaks the eaves and is slated on the roadside elevation.
