Description
The Town Hall in The Square, Gifford, is an earlier 18th century former house that is attached to a clock tower and was rebuilt in 1884. It is complemented by a slightly later house known as Dolphin Cottage to the east, which is listed separately. Together, they create an imposing group that effectively concludes the view along the Fair Green towards the lodges of Yester House.
This three-bay house is situated to the west and is two stories tall. It features white painted harling with painted ashlar dressings. The south elevation has three widely spaced bays, with a central door that has a small-pane horizontal fanlight and a panelled door. There are windows in the flanking bays and above each bay on the first floor, positioned under the eaves. The west gable wall has two windows. The sash and case windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern, and the roof is covered with grey slates, featuring an ashlar end stack and coping at the skews.
The clock tower serves as the centerpiece of the building. It has a tall, three-bay gabled front with a central clock tower. The structure is made of stugged red squared sandstone with lighter ashlar dressings, chamfered reveals, and a string course. A long flight of splayed stone steps leads to the door in the prominent central bay, which is adorned with decorative stone balusters in the balustrade and panelled dies that support wrought-iron lamp standards. The door is at ground level, featuring a round-arched design with a moulded surround and a hoodmould, and consists of two-leaf boarded doors with a small-pane fanlight above.
Above the entrance, there is a louvred round-arched bipartite window with a hoodmould and a stepped apron, which bears a crested shield and a stone plaque inscribed "Erected 1887". The clock, displaying Roman numerals, is positioned under the eaves, and there are additional louvred bipartites on the return sides. The tower has a cornice and a slated spire topped with a pierced square spirelet ventilator at the apex, which is finished with a decorative weathervane. Narrow round-arched windows flank the entrance bay, and the sash and case windows maintain the small-pane glazing pattern. The ashlar coped skews feature ornate skewputts, and there are gable end stacks. At the rear of the clock tower, there is a later 19th century rectangular projection that is three bays wide and has a mansard roof.
